Summary/Objective:
Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions Installation, the Preparator will focus on artwork installation in exhibition galleries, maintaining galleries and casework, preparing, and packing art loans, assisting with collections handling, and assisting in many aspects of preparation for exhibition production. This is a very physical role.

Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Hang, level, and secure framed objects.
  • Position, mount, and secure large and small 3D objects.
  • Work closely with curators, registrars, and conservators during install periods.
  • Join team for specialized trainings and project overview meetings.
  • Assist in artwork framing including cutting materials per cut sheet.
  • Assist in packing and movement of artworks for transport or within the museum.
  • Help maintain galleries and art storage spaces including glass cleaning.
  • Help to create mock-ups and models of exhibitions.
  • Operate power tools such as drills and woodshop tools.
  • Assist with various preparations of exhibition components.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Abide by all health and safety protocols.
Required Competencies:
  • 2+ years of art handling work at a museum, fine art handling company, gallery, or artist studio.
  • Availability with varying schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Experience moving and handling fragile works of art with great care.
  • Experience with museum-level art handling practices; knowledge of archival materials and best practices.
  • Willingness to be trained on and use OSHA-approved safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing.
  • Accomplishments in patching/ painting, roller, and brush finishes.
  • Gantry and rigging experience are a plus.
Physical Demands:
  • Ascending and working on ladders, scissor lifts, and scaffolding.
  • Moving, standing, twisting, and stooping. 
  • Carrying and moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs. 
  • Working around paints, cleansers, and other similar products.
  • Working in spaces that collect dust.
  • Working on an active construction site.

Compensation: The expected salary for this role is $25.00-$31.00 per hour. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
